What Is a Medium Bernedoodle?

Medium Bernedoodles are a crossbreed of a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. To achieve a smaller Medium Bernedoodle size, a Bernese is usually bred with a Moyen or small Standard Poodle.

Typically, Medium Bernedoodles are first-generation (F1) dogs that share a genetic makeup of 50% Bernese and 50% Poodle.

Medium Bernedoodles are smaller than Standard Bernedoodles and range from 40 to 65 pounds in weight and 18 to 24 inches in height.

Medium Bernedoodle Size: How Big Do They Grow?

Bernedoodles are house dogs, so knowing how big Medium Bernedoodles get is imperative to ensure a safe and comfortable living space. Fortunately, you don’t have to own a big house or dedicate half of your flat because Medium Bernedoodles will be fine as long as you take them on long walks.

The Medium Bernedoodle size typically reaches:

  • 40-65 pounds in weight
  • 18-24 inches in height

Medium Bernedoodle Characteristics

Medium Bernedoodles are first-generation puppies, meaning they are 50% Bernese and 50% Poodle. Being a designer breed, Medium Bernedoodles live longer and have stronger health, unlike their purebred parents.

Overall, they inherit the best of both worlds, along with the highest hybrid vigor.

What Coat Does a Medium Bernedoodle Have?

Sharing the qualities of both a Bernese and a Poodle, a Medium Bernedoodle may grow three types of coat: straight, wavy, or curly. If hypoallergenic qualities are your main criteria, we suggest considering the curliest Bernedoodle or choosing a later generation with high Poodle genetic makeup.

Despite having some hypoallergenic qualities, curly Medium Bernedoodle are not 100% allergy-friendly.

If you worry about frequent shedding, choosing an F1 Medium Benredoolde with curls would also mean less vacuuming. That being said, non-shedding Bernedoodle is harder to groom, so there are pros and cons in each coat type.

How Often Do You Need to Groom a Medium Bernedoodle?

The level of grooming will depend on the coat type of your Bernedoodle. If your Medium Bernedoodle has curls, we advise brushing through them 3 times a week. Straight coats are more low-maintenance, but with proper grooming, you will notice less shedding.

At Central Illinois Doodles, we also remind our clients to visit a professional grooming at least once in about 3 months. Some Bernedoodles may have a double coat, so knowing how to take care of it will prevent hairs from matting and tangling.

Are Medium Bernedoodles Easy to Train?

Medium Bernedoodle may share only 50% of a Poodle but it doesn’t mean they will take years to learn the commands. Bernedoodles of any generation are smart cookies, eager to be around their owners and spend time with them either playing or training.

At our facility, we breed many Bernedoodle puppies and are always amazed at how their little brains work. Setting boundaries and rules at an early age is imperative to have a calm and obedient dog. With a few tasty treats, your Medium Bernedoodle won’t have difficulty learning the tricks.

How Long Do Medium Bernedoodles Live?

Medium Bernedoodles usually live up to 15 years. Because these puppies are a designer breed, they are “designed” with better health and a lower chance of inheriting hereditary diseases.

As an example, Bernese Mountain Dogs usually live 8 years at most. Parting with your beloved family members is a heartbreak, so knowing Bernedoodle can spend happy, long years can make every moment with it unforgettable.

What Is Medium Bernedoodle Temperament?

Many families choose a dog that would perfectly match their lifestyle. So, if you lead an active life and can’t wait to step out of a four-wall room, then Medium Bernedoodles are a great choice. Their energetic and charming personality won’t give you time to be bored.

Daily walks are a must for any dog, yet Medium Bernedoodles love long hiking adventures and cuddling on a couch after a tiring day.

Medium Bernedoodles are easily attached to their owners. Despite being people-pleasers, this breed should be trained to stay at home alone when you leave for work. Leaving your Medium Bernedoodle alone may cause it to have separation anxiety, so make sure to have someone around before your Bernedoodle is comfortable enough to be on its own.

Other than that, Medium Bernedoodles are gorgeous and loving dogs. As a matter of fact, this designer breed makes a good service dog due to its loyal and good-natured personality.

Inheriting Bernese qualities, Bernedoodles are often observed to protect their families and make sure no one is left behind.
