Premier Illinois Bernedoodle Breeder

The Bernedoodle is a crossbreed of two adorable and smart purebred canines, a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle. Thanks to the genetics that Bernedoodels inherit from their parents, this designer breed is nothing less than a charming and intelligent furry friend.

Countless American families adopted a Bernedoodle because of these great qualities and how well these dogs behave around kids and other pets.

Which Bernedoodle generation is the best one to get? The answer depends on how hypoallergenic you want it to be, what fur coal variation you are looking for, and how big you want your puppy to grow. You can browse our blog to find your answers.

This article explores second-generation backcross Bernedoodles, or F3 Bernedoodles, and how they differ from earlier generations.

F3 Bernedoodle Family Tree

The family tree of the F3 Bernedoodle is quite long because it is a multi-generation breed. The first-generation Bernedoodle shares an equal percentage of genes from both parents. However, further down the family tree, it becomes evident that Poodle is mostly the dominant gene found in Bernedoodles.

When F1 Bernedoodles are born, they are later bred with Poodle, whose offspring are classified as F1b Bernedoodles. Those share approximately 25% of the genes of a Bernese and 75% of a Poodle.

F1b Bernedoodles are then bred with F1 Bernedoodles. The result is an F3 Bernedoodle that has 37.5% of the genetic traits of a Bernese and 62.5% of a Poodle.

Why Should You Consider F3 Bernedoodles?

Poodle-dominating Bernedoodles are favored for many reasons. First, the curlier the Bernedoodles are, the less they shed – hence, they are often chosen for hypoallergenic qualities. Second, Poodles are highly intelligent, so it only makes sense to choose a Bernedoodle whose mind is capable of learning tricks and commands

Finally, the hybrid vigor of designer dogs, although reduced with every next generation, is still present in F3 Bernedoodles. This phenomenon suggests that Bernedoodles have stronger health and improved welfare compared to their purebred parents.

But are those the only reasons? Let’s explore Bernedoodle’s characteristics and see whether this designer breed is the right choice for you.

F3 Bernedoodle Characteristics

Appearance and Color

F3 Bernedoodles are truly versatile. Because they are the second-generation backcross breed, it is easy to design a dog that would look adorable and have some of the unique colors. The F3 Bernedoodle would closely resemble its parents of the F1b and F1 generations.

Among popular color combinations, there is a tri-color combination with hues of black, brown, and white. Besides, if you have a trusted breeder, you can adopt a puppy with a rare merle pattern, sold in black or even white.

Coat

F3 Bernedoodles inherently have a dominant Poodle gene, to be precise 62.5%. What it means is that the coat ranges from being wavy to extremely curly. Bernedoodles from earlier generations usually have straight to wavy fur and sometimes curly.

As in Poodle, Bernedoodles with curly hairs are non-shedding, so you won’t have to walk with a vacuum behind your furry friend.

Grooming

Grooming F3 Bernedoodles is a very different story from grooming other generations. This is because the curly coat is very demanding. Your routine will involve a good share of untangling and brushing your Bernedoodle’s hair. We also recommend pet parents arrange professional grooming at least once in a few months to ensure your canine feels comfortable.

Size

F3 Bernedoodles don’t get as big as Bernese Mountain Dogs, so they make ideal house dogs. As a designer breed, they come in three different sizes:

  • Toy
  • Mini
  • Standard

Size also directly affects the lifespan of a Bernedoodle. Toy Bernedoodle tends to live a few years longer than Standard Bernedoodles. All designer breeds usually live longer because of their improved health.

Temperament

Probably the most important information that interests all families thinking of adopting a Bernedoodle is their temperament. We have good news for you – Bernedoodles are perfect family dogs. No matter what generation you decide to adopt, you will surely acquire a loyal companion who will be by your side.

Their friendly nature and witty minds will not stop surprising you. Bernedoodles are big attention-seekers and love being around kids. They will happily lounge on the couch with you and won’t mind going on a day-long hike.

Are F3 Bernedoodle Puppies Hypoallergenic?

It is important to note that there is no 100% hypoallergenic dog. However, you can find a dog with hypoallergenic qualities, and Bernedoodles are one of them. If allergy-friendly Bernedoodle is your priority, we highly recommend choosing a generation with the most dominant Poodle genetic makeup.
